  A: WHAT’S ON THIS CD-ROM

1

ReadMe.txt: what you are reading in the booklet NOW - this file (in TEXT mode)

2

ReadMe.doc: This very same file (in Microsoft WORD mode, for those of us with sophistication and a fat wallet)

3

ReadMe.pdf: This very, very same file (in Adobe Acrobat mode, for those of us with the ultimate sophistication and who are cheap - since Acrobat is free. Opening this file also presupposes that you already have some form of Adobe Acrobat on your system)

4

Adobe Acrobat Reader: the folder containing Adobe Acrobat Reader v5 install file (required for viewing Betar Australia – A Personal History Part 2 and Part 3 – and the ReadMe.pdf file mentioned above – it’s all rather confusing, really). This file is also available to be downloaded for free from the Adobe site: http://www.adobe.com.

5

FlipAlbumCD: the folder containing the FlipAlbum system files and its application FACDVIEW.exe.

6

Albums: Betar Australia – A Personal History Part 1 folder containing the FlipAlbum photo album.

7

Overview: this folder contains more system files required for the album viewing.

8

BAPH-2: Betar Australia – A Personal History Part 2 folder containing the Acrobat file BAPH-2.pdf.

9

BAPH-3: Betar Australia – A Personal History Part 3 folder containing the Acrobat file BAPH-3.pdf.

C: USING FLIPALBUM TO ACCESS PART 1

FlipAlbum is a photo album metaphor. The album consists of a number of sections starting with an INTRODUCTION. You flip from page to page by clicking on the left or right page

The Flip To menu item will allow you to go to elsewhere in the album directly

The tabs display the initials of the contributors on the side and top/bottom of the album allow direct access to the various collections.

Note: You may find that the there is a delay after viewing the “Who Married Who” page – the system is creating the THUMBNAILS and this may take some time on computers with slower speeds

The next section contains THUMBNAILS. These are miniatures of all the pages in the album. The background colors indicate the various collections of photos.

When the cursor becomes a magnifying glass over the photo, clicking will blow up that page for immediate viewing. A second click restores the THUMBNAILS page

If you place the cursor over the name at the top of any miniature (so that it becomes a pointing finger), clicking will position you at that page in the album

The TABLE OF CONTENTS section allows direct access to any page by clicking on a page reference line. The order of entries is sequential by collection

Following the body of the album, the INDEX lists the pages alphabetically, by subject/camp/city, etc

FULL SCREEN VIEWING

If you don’t like using the FlipAlbum basic mode, two other options are available:

(a) RIGHT-click in the area OUTSIDE the book. Choose Window Frame from the choice menu presented (which will uncheck this option). To get the menu bar back again later, click outside the book and choose Window Frame again (so that it becomes checked)

(b) Using SLIDE SHOW: With this feature, you can view each double page in the full screen mode using your left and right arrow keys for navigation. First, however, you may wish to check/adjust the SLIDE SHOW settings so that

  i.     There is a yellow background on the screen (best for viewing the annotations

ii.     SLIDE SHOW starts from the current opened page

iii.     The next screen is presented manually – when you press an arrow key

iv.     The direction is forward or backward

This is all set in Options, Set Slide Show

Select Tools, Slide Show from the menu. This will give you full-screen views of every page. The only navigation keys are the right arrow and left arrow keys on your keyboard

The Slide Show will start from your current location – use the Thumbnails, Table of Contents or Index to change the location.

PRINTING:

You can print any double page spread but not individual photos. (Choose File, Print, Left Page).

RUNNING FROM THE HARD DRIVE:

For those of us with better-than-average computer savvy: for faster access, copy the ‘Part 1’ folder on the CD-ROM to your hard disk (IF you have room, of course). To run, double click on FACDVIEW.exe in the FlipAlbumCD directory on the hard drive.

D: USING ADOBE ACROBAT TO ACCESS PARTS 2 AND 3

When you open the reader, go to File, Open for the CD-ROM and select either:

BAPH-2.pdf in the folder of the same name

OR

BAPH-3.pdf in the folder of the same name

When the selected file opens, you will see two tabs on the left side:

Clicking on the BOOKMARK tab will give you a clickable Table of Contents to allow direct access to a topic.

Clicking on the THUMBNAIL tab will show selectable miniatures of each page in a pane on the left of the screen. Click on a thumbnail to show the page in the right pane.

The area initially shown for either can be adjusted by dragging the splitter bar (the vertical line dividing the two areas of the screen) to the right or left.

Navigation of the displayed pages can be adjusted by the selection of the various icons (or tool buttons) at the top of the screen. Move the cursor over each button to see its function (Actual Size, Fit in Window, Fit Width, etc.) Experiment with the settings to realize your ideal one.

  E: INSTALLING ADOBE ACROBAT

If you already have Adobe Acrobat v5 installed, disregard these instructions and go to Section F below.

The Adobe Acrobat Reader folder contains the file rp500enu.exe. Copy it to your temp directory on your hard drive and then double click on the file to install the reader. You can also obtain this product from the Adobe web site - free. The web site contains a later version of this software!!!

  F: HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS:

1

You must be running Windows and have a monitor capable of displaying AT LEAST 800x600 pixels. Higher resolution monitors will give better results. (Current state-of-the-art machines have monitors capable of displaying up to 1600x1200 pixels)).

2

Before attempting the to change the character font size as explained below, try using one of the FlipAlbum features to allow you to read some of the print. For example, from the menu choose Tools, Slide Show as described on page 7. This is a far easier approach than the following-

Note: If your monitor displays 800x600 and the annotations in Part 1 are indistinct, you might increase the character font size  in this manner:

From the Windows desktop screen click start/settings/control panel/display and then the tab 'settings'. At the bottom you will see panel that says 'font size'. Using the arrow next to it, click the option 'other'. You will get a dialogue box that allows you to change the font size by putting your arrow on the ruler shown and dragging. Try a font size of 110% of 'normal'. This is big enough to view on the screen but not too big so that some of the text is lost.

3

A CD-ROM drive at least 12x. The lower this number, the slower the access will be! (Current state-of-the-art CD-ROMs run at 30x-40x).

4

If your computer has a speed of less than 200 Mhz, you will find both FlipAlbum and Acrobat VERY SLOW to perform, especially when flipping to the THUMBNAILS in Part 1 or accessing anything in Part 3, both of which are heavily graphically oriented. (Current state-of-the-art machines run at speeds of 2 Ghz (or 2,000 Mhz)).

  G: COMMENTS, CRITICISMS AND CHANGE

Please forward YOUR FEEDBACK to me. Corrections to the existing or contributions of more materials will be gladly accepted. When enough new materials have arrived, look forward to the Betar Australia - a Personal History version 2. I would especially welcome recent photographs to insert into the album where appropriate!
