10. In my memory, from the mid 1950s until the early 1960s, we (the chanichim) did our own cooking. Vera and Evelyn were from Sydney Betar.
Coming from Sydney gave them a certain cachet. L to R: Vera Beer,
Avraham Appel, Eric Aufgang, Gertrude Gordon (in front) Evelyn Ansley.
Mrs Gordon was the camp cook and may have been the first 'specialist'
cook at Betar camps. (EK)
11. Aaron was popular with the girls. I think it was, in part, because he
did not talk much and so fitted the 'strong, silent' type. This was a
most popular photo. Vera Gordon gave me this copy. I don't know who took
the photo, but from Aaron's pose my guess would be that it was a female.

13. Evie Skall on the Merkazi hike, near a place called 'Tommy's Hut'.
This was taken on a very long hike, led probably by Avraham Appel, who
just loved these tests of endurance. (EK)
16. Aviva was billeted with us - the Skall family - after the Kinglake
West Camp (1959/60). She had to ask her brother's permission. John
Ziegler would not allow her to stay with 'just anyone', and told me that
he approved of us (Judy and I and my parents, I suppose). (EK)
17. Bob Weis, aged 12 . I took this photo because I thought of him as a
special kid. Later he won acclaim as the producer of the TV series
'Women of the Sun'. The link with Betar ideology is very subtle. (EK)
